The ACT Textile Arts Association (ACTTAA) is a not-for-profit organisation of practising artists and hobbyists who are interested in the design and embellishment of textiles, used to make a variety of items. To see examples of our work please visit the Gallery and Exhibition pages.

Our members share their expertise at our monthly meetings and regular workshops. We meet the second Wednesday of the month from 5.30pm at the Woden Seniors Club, Corinna Street (corner with Melrose drive), Phillip, ACT. Please check the Calendar page regularly for any changes.

Some of the techniques we use are: dyeing, fabric manipulation, machine & hand embroidery, silk painting, stencil work, stamping, felting, beading, and printing. We use these techniques to make: wearable art, wall hangings, paintings, sculptural forms, jewellery, bags, hats, accessories and household items to name a few.

Objectives

ACTTAA’s objective is to provide a central body in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) for the promotion of textiles arts amongst artists and interested persons. ACTTAA encourages and seeks to maintain standards of excellence in textiles and other related art works, by encouraging members to experiment, explore, discover and share a variety of techniques and mediums, as well as participation in community activities and exhibitions.

History

The association began life in 1976 as the ACT Batik Association, was incorporated in 1992, and then changed the name to the ACT Batik & Surface Design Association Inc. In 1998 it was again renamed to reflect the range of talents, varied techniques and expertise of its members to Textile Art & Surface Design Association Inc. ACT (TASDA). In 2008 there was a vote to again rename the group ACT Textile Arts Association (ACTTAA).

Logo History

ACTTAA has had numerous logos over the years. Our recent logo was designed by the son of one of our members, and has recently been stylised with future additions of fabrics and textile arts to come.

Membership

Being a member of ACTTAA offers many benefits. Some of these include fantastic workshops given by talented members of our Association and around Australia and the world, discounted supplies, monthly newsletter on textile events in our region and tutorial sheets to name a few. You also get to be a part of an amazing creative community in person and on-line. Our meetings are designed around our creative community where you have the opportunity to have social time to share, create and socialise with each other before the business happens. Being a member also enables you to be a part of our annual exhibition that has a gallery, fashion parade and sales bazaar. We also travel as a group throughout the year to various events, exhibitions and to buy supplies.
