Canberra Textile Centre
As many of you will be aware, Canberra Quilters Inc has proposed that a
Textile Centre be established in the ACT to promote excellence in
textile-related activities. The proposed Centre, to be known as the Canberra
Textile Centre, would provide accommodation for textile-related groups,
including ours. It would offer space for group meetings (large and small),
administration, libraries, workshops (with facilities for ‘wet’ workshops),
exhibitions, and possibly space for sale of members’ work. Some space would
be allocated for sole use by individual groups and some would be shared.
The Canberra Textile Centre Inc was incorporated on 2 March 2007. At this
stage the application for accommodation is about number 59 on a list of over
100. Accommodation is allocated on a first come first served basis, with the
proviso that the accommodation must be suitable. This means that a group
seeking a small amount of space may jump ahead of another seeking a larger
amount (or vice versa), depending on the space that becomes available. We
are hopeful that space in one of the schools that were recently closed will
be made available for the textile centre. We have been told that this is not
likely to be before June-July 2007.
